CITY CEMETERY

LOS ANGELES 2006

This excavation was part of an exciting CRM project through EDAW in Los Angeles.  The LA unified school district was building a new high school on a plot of land that used to be an old cemetery.  City Cemetery was one of the earliest cemeteries in California, but was originally moved to make way for the 101 Freeway.  The area had "supposedly" been emptied of bodies, but as we found, that was not the case.  We began by slowly exposing the area with a backhoe and as soon as we came across the outline of a grave shaft we began to excavated it with shovels and towels.  Most of the time we came only across the remains of the coffin (sometimes with the original viewing glass intact), but a few still contained the bones of the original inhabitant!
